How does the Komani Lake ferry work, and is it worth it?

✓ Last checked: · Valid for the 2026–2027 season· 3 min read

Short answer

The Komani Lake ferry sails daily in season between Koman and Fierzë in northern Albania: in 2026 the main boat (Berisha) left Koman at 09:00 and Fierzë at 13:00, took about 2.5 hours and cost about €9 online or €10 in cash. Shuttles connect it with Shkodër and Valbonë for about €8 each. It is worth it: it is the most scenic way to reach Valbonë and turns the Theth – Valbonë hike into an easy three-day loop from Shkodër.

Komani Lake is a long, narrow reservoir on the Drin river, squeezed between steep limestone walls. The ferry across it is not just transport: for many hikers it is one of the highlights of a trip to the Albanian Alps, and the easiest way to reach Valbonë from Shkodër.

The ferry at a glance (2026)

Berisha Alpin
Koman → Fierzë 09:00 11:00
Fierzë → Koman 13:00 08:00
Season about mid-April to early November mainly June to August
Crossing time about 2.5 h about 2.5–3 h
Foot passenger about €9 online, €10 (1,000 lek) cash check locally
Bicycle about €10.60 online, €12 cash check locally
Car €7 per m² online, €8 per m² cash check locally

A third, smaller boat (Dragobia) has been reported leaving Fierzë very early in the morning with stops along the lake, but its times are less predictable. Operators publish slightly different season dates each year, so confirm the day before you travel.

How the day works

  1. Shkodër → Koman (about 2 h). Berisha’s shuttle picks up in Shkodër around 06:45 (about €8). The last part of the road is narrow and winding, through a single-lane tunnel to the pier.
  2. Check in at Koman. Foot passengers are asked to be there about 15 minutes before sailing, vehicles 30 minutes. In July and August, come earlier.
  3. The crossing (about 2.5 h). The boat winds through gorges, past isolated farms on the steep slopes. Sit on deck for the views.
  4. Fierzë → Valbonë (about 1 h). Minibuses wait at the pier; in 2026 Berisha’s ran at 12:00 and 16:00 for about €8.

Going the other way, a minibus leaves Valbonë around 10:30 for the 13:00 boat, and a shuttle waits at Koman to take you back to Shkodër (around 15:45).

Booking and paying

  • Book online in summer, and always with a car: vehicle space is limited. Berisha takes bookings through its own website, with a small discount for paying online.
  • Carry cash in lek or euros for shuttles and snacks; card payment at the piers is unreliable.
  • Bring water and food. There is little to buy on board.

Combining it with the Theth – Valbonë hike

The ferry and the Theth to Valbonë hike fit together into a classic loop of about three days:

Day Route
1 Shkodër → Koman by shuttle, ferry to Fierzë, minibus to Valbonë
2 Hike Valbonë → Valbona Pass → Theth (about 6–8 h)
3 Minibus Theth → Shkodër

You can also do it the other way round. Either way, you carry your own bag over the pass unless you arrange luggage transport by road through your guesthouse. For the minibus between Shkodër and Theth, see how to get to Theth.

Is it worth it?

Yes, for most people. Compared with the road around the mountains, the ferry is cheaper, prettier and not much slower. The downsides: there is only one main sailing per day in each direction, so a missed connection can cost you a day, and the boats can be crowded in high season. If you are short on time or travelling outside the main season, a private transfer is the alternative, but it is far more expensive.

If you would rather not piece together ferries, shuttles and luggage yourself, The Balkan Trail arranges the permits and transfers while you walk at your own pace with guides along the route, with luggage transport and gear rental as options.
